She’s one of Australia’s most well-known comedians and an outspoken advocate for same-sex marriage.
Now Magda Szubanski has opened up about the toll taking a public stance has taken on her and revealed she is considering suing those who have levelled a series of ‘foul’ slurs at her character.
‘I get called everything like a pervert to a paedophile, to the point that I’m almost going to get legal about it if people keep on about it,’ she told the Kyle and Jackie O Show on Wednesday.
Magda, who is openly gay, has been one of the Yes campaign’s most ardent supporters.
Speaking to Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson, the Kath and Kim star said she was frustrated that those involved with the Yes campaign had been labelled as ‘bullies’ by their ideological opponents.
‘There’s been this real perception that the Yes side are bullies, we don’t talk about the stuff that gets said to us because we don’t want to give airspace to it, but it is foul,’ she said.
‘It has been going on for years. I get called everything like a pervert and a paedophile to the point that I’m almost going to get legal about it if people keep on about it.’
Magda also slammed the No campaign’s controversial advertising methods, arguing that their commercials had ‘no substance’.
‘The No campaign can get away with saying all sorts of crap – there’s no substance to it,’ she said.
‘That makes me angry as a citizen, because you’re disrespecting people if you don’t give them the right information, and then let them make up their minds.’
Australians have until November 7 to have their say in the same sex marriage postal survey, with the results to be revealed on November 15.
Magda revealed she was gay on Valentine’s Day 2012, as part of a push for same-sex marriage.
She has since pleaded the case for marriage equality in a series of passionate media appearances, including a tearful interview with The Project in August.
